Ibzan: Judge of Israel who sent his 30 daughters packing and imports 30 wives for his sons from abroad.
Abroad, Strong's Ref. # 2351, Romanized chuwts, Pronounced khoots. Meaning to sever; properly, separate by a wall, i.e. outside
Arab wives for his sons?
Unlike the comic show (Fiddler on the roof), the match making father would have been looking for good breeding stock for his sons and wealthy men for his daughters.
JUDGES 12:8 Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel.
JUDGES 12:9 And he had thirty sons, and thirty daughters, whom he sent abroad, and took in thirty daughters from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.
Ibzan did not take the local Israelite women for his sons, but he sent "abroad" to get wives for his 30 sons.
Not only are the Israelites recorded poking and marrying every one around them, here this Israelite ruler seemed to have been involved in a big swap of sons and daughters. Here in Judges we find the Israelites were swapping their sons and daughters with the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites 3:6 And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons
I suppose they went outside Israel to get wives then for the same reason Americans go out of the country to get foreign wives today. ( Thinking they will be grateful and they will be better women than the local spoiled women).
Here he sent his 30 daughters abroad and took 30 daughters from abroad for his sons. Kind of looks like an exchange student / wife program... Got rid of his daughters to other Arabs and got some good Arab wives for his sons?
